Lalesa is more than just the name of a washing station; it’s a place where we stood last year, watched women carefully sort coffee cherries, and admired Wubit as she led her team with incredible determination. Lalesa is proof that coffee can change lives. And now, we get to share this coffee with you. It’s the taste of a place that truly moved us.
This version of Lalesa is black honey processed, a method that enhances sweetness and texture, creating a complex and elegant profile full of floral and citrus notes.

The story of the station and processing
Lalesa is the largest washing and drying station in Gedeb, employing up to 250 seasonal workers during harvest. It is run by Ephtah Specialty Coffee, led by Wubit Bekele, a company focused on transparency, empowering women in the coffee supply chain, and supporting the local community.
Right next to the station, they’ve established a nursery where female workers can leave their children, and a space where women weave traditional baskets to sell. We saw all of this firsthand during our visit and left convinced that behind every great coffee is a real, meaningful impact.
The coffee comes from smallholder farmers in the surrounding area who grow coffee under the shade of Ensete trees. After harvest, the cherries are carefully sorted, floated (a process in which freshly picked cherries are submerged in water to separate ripe fruit from damaged or underripe ones), and dried on raised beds for 12 to 15 days.
Social and environmental impact
Ephtah supports its producer network through upfront payments, quality-based premiums, and educational assistance for farmers’ children. Future investments include new water tanks, expanding drying capacity, and cultivating additional food crops to support the local economy.
Variety
This coffee comes from traditional Ethiopian heirloom varieties — a diverse group of indigenous cultivars and locally selected strains that have naturally adapted to the region over generations. These varieties thrive in the high altitudes of Gedeb and are known for their complexity, floral aromatics, and juicy fruit character, all hallmarks of top-tier naturally processed Ethiopian coffees.

Why Uganda Matters
Namugowa isn’t just another specialty coffee. It’s part of a bigger story that we’ve poured a piece of ourselves into. A year ago, we had the chance to be right there in Uganda – to meet the farmers who grow the coffee, to see the process from harvest to drying. And that’s when we realized we wanted to do even more.
Together with The Coffee Gardens, we co-financed the opening of a QC Lab in Uganda. This quality control laboratory enables farmers to evaluate their harvest directly on site, refine their practices, and, as a result, achieve fairer prices.
Every cup of Namugowa is not only about flavor, but also about the future. About giving farmers the tools and knowledge that open doors to better conditions and stability. And that’s exactly why we love returning to Uganda.🤎

The coffee company has a station below the mountain where most farmers live; they know all of them in person. Why Inza Matters
